ALL HAIL THE DARK LORD, One Last Time.
I wanted to get an official announcement out to you all about this event, Zelota beat me to it. :) It's more than ok though.. because Zelota had known Xirtam longer and had some closer ties than some of us ever had.
So I thought I would come in to verify this is true, it has been confirmed by a couple real-life acquaintances of Xirt's.
XirtamVOTF still floats around EVE but the character has been sold and re-sold, so if you see him online - it's not a ghost.
I first met Xirtam in April of 2004. My corp had just joined the Curse Alliance and I soon realized though Xirt and his boys that PvP was where I wanted to be. My corp did a lot of manufacturing and mining and I slowly found myself hanging out with those "other" guys more than my own corp mates. Fast forward to 2006 that same corp of mine decided to merge into VOTF and the rest is history for me. I did finally get the chance to drive out and meet him in 2014 and we had a good time; I'm glad I got the opportunity.
Xirtam was a father figure to a lot of us young players 13 years ago, and he was a brother to men and women in uniform around the world, and not just literally, but in his actions.
Last night we gathered on a TeamSpeak server to discuss and remember him. I heard storys about Xirtam intervening in a suicide attempt of one of his members, I heard stories where Xirtam was ready and willing to drive 1000 miles to make a hospital visit for a corp mate (but no one would let him.. it was minor and that was ridiculous).. but that's the kind of guy he was. It was about the strategy and the tactics, it was about the corporation and the PvP... but more than anything EVE Online (and MechWarrior Online and BattleTech:3025 and Archage) was about the community. If people were upset and not treated fairly Xirt would change course of the entire corp to make the environment better for all. It wasn't always the best stategic decision LOL but - he truly cared about his membership.
There is a lot more on my mind and I have a LOT of sound clips and YouTube links to share, but I didn't organize anything before beginning this post.. so keep checking back and I promise to deliver some XirtamVOTF content later today. For those of you who didn't know him, I'm sorry you never got the chance. Easily the most charismatic leader EVE has ever seen. There is plenty of content around the EVE-O Forum Archives if you folks want to dig.
